GDI – Group Disability Insurance

The Group Disability Insurance scheme (GDI) provides income protection cover should illness or injury result in the loss of your medical certificate for an extended period that results in an inability to work.

Members can choose the level of cover required (within certain parameters) ranging from $500 to $25,000 per month, and the length of their qualifying period (either 30, 45, 90,180, 365 or 730 days).

The premium you pay for this insurance is calculated based on the benefit level, qualifying period (for the GDI), and your age. For GDI, the benefit is paid monthly in arrears after the end of your qualifying period, and up to the earlier of the date you get your medical certificate restored or the maximum payment period of 24 months.

This insurance is designed to align with the sick leave provisions in your CEA or to complement the MBF by increasing the overall length of time before a member's MBF capital benefit is exhausted, which provides a longer time frame to recover and return to work or change career if your medical certificate has been permanently suspended or disqualified.

During the renewal window in March prior to April billing, you will receive notification of the options available to you and have the chance only then to increase your cover by up to 15% or increase your wait period without the need for a full personal health statement, an increase of 20% can be made with evidence of a change in aircraft and/or rank due to a promotion; all other increases of more then 15% or reductions in wait period will require a personal health statement.

Application forms & further information are available via the Howden NZALPA Portal.
