The New Zealand Air Line Pilots’ Association (NZALPA) will begin its regular meetings with Airways this month on behalf of its air traffic control (ATC) and flight service members.
The meetings are a continuation of some initial steps taken last year towards open dialogue and collaborative decision-making with the air navigation service provider.
“In recent times, there hasn’t been a collaborative relationship between the two parties; we’re hoping to change that so we can make strides forward in our industry, with the interests of both sides in mind,” NZALPA ATC Director Jonathan Brooks said.
“We all stand to gain so much more by talking and engaging an interest-based methodology when faced with industrial issues in our fast-paced and ever-changing industry.”
Meetings this year with Airways will cover pay and progression, potential role changes and long-term Airways projects and their respective impact on NZALPA members.
NZALPA has a similar relationship with Air New Zealand, through the High Performance Engagement (HPE) programme, where the parties work collaboratively on solutions for both the airline and the pilots.
The meetings with Airways will continue throughout 2017.
“I am hoping that by the end of the year we will have an agreed and practical working document, which Airways and the NZALPA ATC Council can use every day,” Brooks said.
“The document will be as much for Airways as for us and will outline expectations of how we will propose to work together.
“In an ideal world, we shouldn’t be afraid to talk and work together – if Airways make changes, we want to help, and if we have issues, they will listen.”
